When a leading supplement manufacturer faced a critical disruption in their supply chain, two essential ingredients were suddenly unavailable due to a devastating fire and explosion at a key production facility. Combined with ongoing industry challenges, this crisis threatened the manufacturer’s ability to maintain production across its portfolio.
To mitigate this, the manufacturer’s procurement team swiftly identified a potential new supplier for these vital ingredients. However, ensuring that the replacement ingredients met the same stringent quality, safety, and efficacy standards as the originals was key to maintaining product functionality and stability. The supplement manufacturer contacted RSSL to perform a comprehensive evaluation and validation of the alternative ingredients.
RSSL adopted a systematic and multi-disciplinary approach to assess the new supplier's ingredients, ensuring they met both technical and regulatory requirements.
Ingredient Analysis & Comparison: We began by conducting a thorough analysis of the original and alternative ingredients. This involved evaluating nutrient composition, particle size, and solubility. Advanced contaminant screening, using advanced techniques such as ICP-MS, LC-MS/MS, was performed to identify contaminants such as heavy metals and pesticides.
Allergen Detection: Targeted ELISA tests were run to detect potential allergens, a key factor in protecting consumer health and complying with stringent allergen labelling regulations. This step was critical in avoiding costly recalls and maintaining consumer trust.
Stability & Compatibility Testing: RSSL conducted rigorous stability and compatibility testing to assess whether the new ingredients could maintain potency throughout shelf-life and integrate seamlessly into the existing formulations without compromising product quality.
Regulatory Review & Compliance: Our regulatory specialists scrutinised all documentation to ensure that the reformulated products met both EU and global regulatory standards. This included validating health claims, ensuring accurate ingredient declarations, and confirming compliance with food and pharmaceutical regulations.
Thanks to RSSL's comprehensive evaluation and collaboration, the alternative ingredients were successfully qualified for use across the manufacturer’s product lines. The new supplier rapidly scaled production, allowing the client to meet growing demand and avoid production disruptions.
