Back then, our HPLC team was a small part of the Pharmaceutical Chemistry group, working closely with the Wet Chemistry team. In 2018, I transitioned to the Wet Chemistry team, where I have remained ever since. What initially drew me to this field was the sheer variety of testing we offer to our clients and the thrill of solving complex technical problems.
My passion for chemistry and natural curiosity have propelled me to take on diverse projects, optimise processes and continuously seek ways to improve our methods. This unwavering commitment to problem-solving and technical excellence has been the cornerstone of my career progression. Today, I am proud to be recognised as a technical expert in my department.
At RSSL, scientific excellence is harmoniously intertwined with inclusivity and diversity. Every day, I am privileged to collaborate with brilliant scientists from around the globe, all united by a shared vision of delivering top-notch services. This collaborative, dynamic environment truly sets RSSL apart.
A key driver for my passion is the continuous learning culture here. There’s always something new to discover - often daily, and certainly every week. This constant development quenches my scientific curiosity and fuels my thirst for knowledge. Throughout my career at RSSL, I have had numerous opportunities to enhance both my technical and soft skills, always with unwavering support.
As a female scientist, I am acutely aware of the underrepresentation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). I feel incredibly fortunate to have been inspired by female scientists - mentors, managers and leaders - who have profoundly shaped my career. Their guidance has been invaluable and I am committed to paying it forward by supporting the next generation of women in science.
As a Technical Specialist in the Wet Chemistry services laboratory, my role revolves around a deep understanding of pharmacopeial standards and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements. My daily responsibilities are both varied and challenging, ensuring no two days are ever the same.
On a typical day, I engage in a mix of routine and complex tests, meticulously reviewing raw data to maintain the highest standards of accuracy. My role also involves releasing Certificates of Analysis (COAs) to clients, troubleshooting technical issue and working closely with my talented technical team to solve any challenges that come our way.
But my responsibilities don't end there. I have the privilege of mentoring junior analysts, guiding them through troubleshooting challenges and assisting with out-of-specification investigations. It's incredibly rewarding to see them grow and develop their skills.
I also collaborate with our Marketing and Commercial teams to showcase our technical expertise, support client enquiries and contribute to the growth of our business. This multifaceted approach allows me to blend my technical skills with strategic thinking, making every day an exciting adventure.
Celebrating women in science and engineering is crucial. Historically, women have been underrepresented in STEM fields, but this is far from the reality of today’s scientific landscape. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with and learning from many exceptional women in chemistry, biology, genetics and engineering. These individuals are driven by passion, innovation and a relentless pursuit of scientific progress.
Women in science face unique challenges, especially as we take on additional roles in life - be it as partners, mothers, caregivers, or even following a passion and becoming part-time artists, athletes or musicians. In the past, rigid workplace structures made it difficult to balance these responsibilities with a career in STEM. However, times are changing. Campaigns like Women in Engineering and Women in Science help break outdated stereotypes and showcase the evolving opportunities for women in STEM. They send a powerful message - women can be exceptional scientists, engineers and leaders while managing multiple roles and responsibilities successfully.
Working at RSSL is uniquely enriching, particularly as a woman in science. This company truly values inclusivity and it's inspiring to see so many women in leadership roles across various departments. It's clear that at RSSL, scientific excellence, quality and safety are paramount, regardless of gender.
In addition to career development opportunities, RSSL provides flexible working arrangements and accommodations that enable women to thrive both professionally and personally. Here, women in science are not only recognised and supported but celebrated.
A message to the next generation of aspiring women and girls in science - aim high and never give up on your dreams. No challenge is too big and no goal is out of reach. Remember, you are stronger and more capable than you realise. The key to success lies in resilience, determination and stepping outside your comfort zone.
Draw inspiration from the incredible female scientists who have paved the way for us. Take Marie Curie, for instance - one of the first women to pursue academic studies despite financial hardships and the first person ever to win two Nobel Prizes in different scientific fields. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion for science.
The scientific world needs more women, more diversity and more new voices to drive progression and innovation. So be bold, be curious and embrace every opportunity to learn and grow. The future of science is yours to shape!
